Abstract

Beginning since nineteen-nineties, an emerging body of literature has been consistently emphasizing the role of social capital like interpersonal trust, norms, and civic engagement in economic development. However, the role of social capital in economic development still remains a contested concept. This paper makes an extensive literature review and analyses the theoretical issues, operationalizing aspects, and empirical findings associated with the contribution of social capital in economic development. Finally, the paper provides some policy implications and suggestions.
